Jeremiah 2

v. 13- "My people have committed two sins:
They have forsaken me,
the spring of living water,
and have dug their own cisterns,
broken cisterns that cannot hold water."

So... not only have we forsaken our first love (Rev. 2:4), the Love who allured us into the desert and spoke tenderly to us (Hosea 2:14), but we turned to worthless gods (v. 11, 28) that have no power, love, or being! This is the first place in the Bible that the words "living water" are used together. It instantly reminds me of "The Woman at the Well" and how Jesus promised that she would never thirst again if she just drank of the Living Water. He promises that same thing to us! Some of us accept and some deny, but we all will try and satisfy our thirst on our own at one point or another. We build make-shift cisterns that are cracked and leaking. They may hold water for a bit, but sooner or later, we will thirst again! And when we do, we will turn around and find Jesus still standing right there ready to take us back again. He may say, " Now why go to Egypt to drink water from the Shihor? And why go to Assyria to drink water from the River?" (v. 18), yet He still will pursue us and forgive us.
v. 19- "'Your wickedness will punish you;
your backsliding will rebuke you.
Consider then and realize
how evil and bitter it is for you
when you forsake the LORD your God
and have no awe of me,'
declares the Lord, the LORD Almighty."

There are consequences for every decision we make. They can be good and they can be absolutely horrible, but they are always guaranteed to happen. Here, the Lord is saying, "You brought this bad stuff on yourself! You forgot me and how awesome I am! YOU did this, not me!" God commands us to remember how awful it is when we forsake our Lord. And it is. I'm considering it even now! Apart from Him, we can do NOTHING (John 15:5)! We were made to be a part of the Vine, and when we are cut off and separated, we lose our source of life. We die. We can do nothing. "I had planted you like a choice vine of sound and reliable stock. How then did you turn against me into a corrupt, wild vine?"(v. 21)
