v. 24-25- "They do not say to themselves, 'Let us fear the Lord our God, who gives autumn and spring rains in season, who assures us of the regular weeks of harvest.' Your wrongdoings have kept these away; your sins have deprived you of good."
So I've come to realize how depressing the book of Jeremiah is. It's just so terribly convicting and challenging, to be honest. I like to think that I'm really a lot better than the Israelite people... but it is not so. I am just as nasty and deceitful. I turn to false gods just as often, if not more. This verse terrifies me, for I know that everything has a consequence and that our God is a just God!
But this isn't the whole story! Praise God!! He redeems our souls and continues to romance us! His justice was satisfied by the blood of His one Son, Jesus Christ!
"On the cross the penalty of our sins was paid; it is as though we ourselves had died in fulfillment of the just curse of the law; the handwriting of ordinances that was against us was wiped out; and henceforth we have an entirely new life in the full favor of God.”
- J. Gresham Machen, What Is Faith?
I love these lines from the song "In Christ Alone":
In Christ alone, who took on flesh
Fullness of God in helpless Babe
This gift of love and righteousness
Scorned by the ones He came to save
'Til on that cross as Jesus died
The wrath of God was satisfied
For every sin on Him was laid
Here in the death of Christ I live, I live
So, yes, we do serve a just God! But He rescued us from destruction and death out of His great love for us! We did nothing to deserve anything, but He gave us His everything! How joyous we should be!
